Ellen NAYLOR (nee WALMSLEY)

Ellen NAYLOR (nee WALMSLEY) was the wife of Joseph NAYLOR (tailor), the mother of Sarah Ann BROUGHTON (nee NAYLOR) and Thomas NAYLOR etc; she was the grandmother of Ellen JONES (nee NAYLOR) and is my great great great grandmother.

She was born on 13th September 1840 in (no specific address given on the birth certificate) Newton-in-Makerfield, Lancashire. I find her baptism as 20th September 1840 in Winwick, the daughter of William WALMSLEY and Betty (nee HICKSON or HIGSON)

I find her parents marriage on 27th April 1834 at Winwick, Lancashire:
(William WALMSLEY to Elizabeth or Betty HICKSON or HIGSON)

It appears she may have had an older sister Martha born in 1836 but who died in 1840:
Burial 21st Sept 1840 at St Peter, Newton-le-Willows, Lancashire, England
Martha Walmsly - Age 4
Abode: Newton
Buried by: R Tagert Curate
Register: Burials 1813 - 1866, Page 82, Entry 654
Source: LDS Film 1885732

In the 1841 census I find Ellen with her family at Mill Lane, Newton In Makerfield, Lancashire:
William WALMSLEY 25 millwright
Betty WALMSLEY 25
Mary WALMSLEY 7
Jane WALMSLEY 3
Ellen WALMSLEY 7mths
*Hugh WALMSLEY 20 shoemaker
(all born in Lancashire)

*This Hugh WALMSLEY appears to be the half-brother of William and later became publican of the White Lion, High Street, Newton-In-Makerfield. The White Lion pub was suppose to have been the watering hole for tailors!
Walmsley Street (running off the High Street near location of former public house - now Hiltons Travel Agents) is suppose to have been named after this family.

In 1851 (no specific address) Newton In Makerfield, Lancashire she is still living with her family:
William WALMSLEY hd 40 Millwright b. Golborne
Betty WALMSLEY wf 37 b. Leigh
Jane WALMSLEY dau 13 scholar b. Newton
Ellen WALMSLEY dau 10 scholar b. Newton
William WALMSLEY son 8 scholar b. Newton
Ann WALMSLEY dau 5 scholar b. Newton
Martha WALMSLEY dau 3 b. Newton
Margaret WALMSLEY dau 11mths b. Newton

On 09th December 1860 at St Elphin, Warrington, Lancashire she married Joseph NAYLOR (tailor) son of Richard & Elizabeth NAYLOR (of Up Holland, Lancashire).

In 1861 she appears without her husband:
Atherton, Lancashire
GREGORY Household
Ellen NAYLOR 20 boarder marr cotton winder b. Newton

1861
Cross Lane, Newton In Makerfield, Lancashire
Joseph NAYLOR son marr 29 tailor b. Upholland
(with his widowed mother, head of household and siblings James, Elizabeth, Mary & Thomas.)

By 1871 Joseph & Ellen are living in Derby Street, Newton-In-Makerfield, Lancashire.

Sadly on 06th Sept 1872, at Derby St, Newton-in-Makerfield, Lancashire her husband, Joseph NAYLOR, tailor, aged 38, died.

Less than two years later on 02nd February 1874, at 58 Ellesmere St, Pennington, Leigh her father William WALMSLEY (aged 64) died. He was buried on 06th February 1874, plot 15-K-30, Cemetery, Manchester Road, Leigh, Lancashire.

By 1881 Ellen, a widow and head of household, was living in Gas Street, Newton-In-Makerfield, Lancashire.
It may be possible that here she got to know the other then Ellen NAYLOR (prev CONNOR nee GARVEY) also a widow and living in Gas Street. She may have been the Ellen NAYLOR, a witness on the certificate of Irish Ellen's third marriage to James POWELL. Maybe this is how Ellen's son Thomas got to know and later to marry Irish Ellen's daughter Ellen (and the rest they say is history!)

On 03rd June 1883, at 60 Ellesmere St, Pennington, Leigh her mother Betty WALMSLEY (aged 70) died. She was buried on 06th June 1883, plot 15-K-30, The Cemetery, Manchester Road, Leigh, Lancashire.

In 1891 Ellen NAYLOR (nee WALMSLEY) is still living in (41) Gas Street, Newton-In-Makerfield, Lancashire.

It appears her sister Mary WALMSLEY died in March qua 1900 Leigh, 8c, 215 (aged 67).

By 1901 she had moved to 35 Back Gas St, Newton In Makerfield, Lancashire.

I have been unable to locate her in the 1911 census so I suspect she died before it was taken. I have not located her actual death certificate as yet, nor can I find her or her husband's burial records.

A possible death entry for Ellen NAYLOR is June qua 1909, Warrington, 8c, 139 (age 68).
